It's Bandcamp Friday again, which is always a big help for daft lads like us.
We've reduced the price of our latest album, 'This Blue Earth' on CD & vinyl so those who are yet to get their mitts on it can do so, and can be more like Stanley..

Imagine being around for this, the birth of Rocksteady - it must have been absolutely magic.

Today's Sunday Service is all about this glorious, if brief, scene. No chatter, just Rocksteady.

Stanley says swerve the flags; we don't need this fascist groove thang.

He does, however, recommend you buy our This Blue Earth tarot-style cards, as only 16 sets remain

Evertonians, Toffees, Top Blues.

Matty and Danny will be playing outside the ground tomorrow from 17:45.

Our brief has been uplifting songs (rules most of our own out) and vaguely Everton-related songs, so basically, any song with 'Blues' in the title has been considered..
August 26, 2025 at 9:31 PM
The lyrics are more direct than anything I've ever written, and were largely influenced by the stylings of the wonderful Jimmy Campbell. Oh, Jimmy.
August 26, 2025 at 7:12 PM
Musically, this is all about the harmonies provided by the magnificent Tony 'T-Dog' Ferg and Danny Lee's wonderful guitar work - the brief for that was to sound like an ice cream van, which, as ever, he nailed.

THESE BLUE SONGS - No. 8 - POLYNESIA

"So far away..."

A bit of a respite; this was chosen for the album, and placed where it is to give a bit of relief.. an album completely made up of songs about nationalism and apocalypse might get a bit much, so we needed a bit of sunshine..
August 26, 2025 at 7:12 PM
Our influence playlist continues to surge, becoming a jukebox for all things This Blue Earth..

Musically, this was initially inspired by an album of Mexican songs of the civil war, but I've long since forgotten which one! As the song progressed, I was increasingly leaning towards cinematic songs like 'Romance in Durango' by, yes him again, Bob Dylan

THESE BLUE SONGS - No. 7 - HILLS OF MEXICO

"Immortality! Immortality!"

Another literary one, and another exercise in making a pretentious idea not sound like one - this is an imagined soundtrack for the Ernest Hemmingway classic book 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'.

The subject matter is, in all honesty, too big for a three minute pop song, which is, lest we forget, an absolute banger.

Influences here are Charles Mingus, El Goodo and Tom Waits.

Here's a playlist of all influences so far. It's a PEACH..

The song isn't literally about flagpoles, it's also about the need for unity, being aware of the struggle we're in and above all else, having compassion.

The right and their ilk can - and do - express their anger (their "legitimate concerns" if you believe the papers), so I thought, why not us?
August 24, 2025 at 8:07 AM
..But then I considered that a bit of anger is needed. Us on the left can easily fall into the idea we have to rise above anger, when in fact, it's a valid emotion, when used correctly..

Flags are great; I (Matty) am a keen vexillologist. The folklore behind the symbols and history of them is an endless well of wonder. They can undoubtedly unite and represent many corners of society. However. When used to separate, divide and intimidate, things get nasty quickly.
August 24, 2025 at 8:07 AM
One of the big hitters, we've been playing this live since 2021. It was written in early 2020, around the time of the farcical Brexit negotiations, and is a firmly anti-nationalist song, highlighting the danger of masking so many societal ills with a flag..
