Spending some time today learning and writing about the life and presidency of Zachary Taylor, the third shortest serving US president. (I’ve already written about the first and second shortest terms, William Henry Harrison and James Garfield.) Useless trivia is a fun benefit of travel!

Visited Zachary Taylor National Cemetery briefly this morning, to write about that president and to pay homage on this Veterans Day.

Cincinnati’s Union Station is an art deco masterpiece. While Amtrak still comes through, the majority is now home to several museums, a great use of a 1930s rail hub!

This California kid isn’t used to such weather. But it sure is pretty.

Cincinnati has some stunning architecture, with the Plum Street synagogue being chief among those. Seriously, friends, how beautiful is this?

Louisville has a shockingly awesome downtown. Well, an awesome Main Street, as once you get a block or so off it, it’s a bit dead. But still, cool place!

This was truly a lovely guided tasting of the entire @michterswhiskey.bsky.social “normal” line. I can’t recommend this experience enough if you’re in Louisville!

A huge bat means I must be in Louisville!

Been back for less than 24 hours, and already missing Mexico. Being more acutely invested in the US news cycle while I am home is not good for my mental health.

Congrats @bsky.app on 40M!

Writing about Ballet Folklorico and Lucha Libre today, and it’s sort of fun to compare the two. Mexican culture is alive and thriving!

2000 words written this morning about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. So let’s look at one of her most moving works, a still life of watermelons with the words “Viva La Vida” added a year before her health, just after having a leg amputated. While I don’t relate to optimism like this, cheers, Frida!

It seems almost a waste of a view like this to spend my mornings writing, but it’s much better than my home office and I don’t want to get too far behind.

There are worse views than this one in Cabo.

It certainly wasn’t my favorite activity, but there is no doubting the cultural significance of lucha libre, Mexican wrestling.

If you liked the Diego Rivera murals at Mexico City’s Palacio Nacional, you’ll love this building he designed at UNAM. It is covered in mosaic!

Some cities just feel different. They feel special. Mexico City is one of those. I had wondered if I would love it as much on my return as I did during the early days of my travel writing.

I do, maybe even more.

Went to the Ballet Folklorico last night, which was awesome. Best part? It is inside the magnificent Palacio de las Bellas Artes.

The murals of Diego Rivera in the Palacio Nacional are a must-see in Mexico City. You will have to get in line early, though, as visits are by guided tour only, with spots assigned based on arrival time.

Mexico City’s Gran Hotel is a former department store. Make sure you walk in to see the beauty!

For my second trip to Teotihuacan, I decided to start from the air. And yeah, that was a good choice! #Mexico

Another shot of the cathedral at night. Mexico City has my heart.

There is a buzz to Mexico City, an excitement found in few places. I love this city!
