This, is a great fucking point
Serpico came out 2 years after the actual officer was shot in the face for exposing corruption and Dog Day Afternoon mentions the Attica massacre that took place 4 years before it was released. Lumet is one of a kind, but you don’t see this much topical and specific political stuff in modern film.
