Football ("soccer"), running, cycling, urbanism, dadjokes, politics. Hopeful nonprofit wordslinger, occasional scribe for hire.
My last four days:
* Friday, 20 miles at Critical Mass on the gravel bike
* Saturday, 41 miles to/from Stone Mtn. with a roadie group
* Sunday, 12 miles, two mountain-bike loops at Ft. Yargo State Park
* Today, 8.5 early-a.m. miles running errands on the e-bike.

My legs are sore! But I'm happy.

Yet another cool milestone on my ebike. Roughly 95% of these miles (over the last 15 months) directly replace car trips.

"It builds character," said Calvin's dad, who I've long ago turned into.

Last night, a driver sheared it off then carried it on the roof of the car about a half-mile and three streets away. #carsruincities #bancars

This is why we can't have nice things, and why @thewaroncars.bsky.social is becoming less of a tongue-in-cheek title with each passing day. So GA DOT literally installed this RRFB (on-demand pedestrian crossing signal) two weeks ago.

Most cyclists in Atlanta know exactly where this spot is. I hit it at the exact right time this morning. #sunrise

Hit-and-run asshole driver took out two mailboxes, street signs and a fire hydrant on my street, knocking out water service to about six streets. But hey, what can you expect when we build our society around minimally trained people operating heavy machinery with minimal licensing? #CarsRuinCities

Rode my ebike down to the Georgia State Capitol to join
@sairaforgeorgia.bsky.social to rally support for our public health workers at the CDC, and to call on state leaders to grow a spine and push back against indiscriminate cuts by "DOGE." I can't believe I gotta rally for this sh*t...

Some absolute HERO used packing tape to keep the beg button pressed at the Bill Kennedy Way / Memorial Drive pedestrian scramble. The only thing wrong with this is that I didn't think to do it first.

The guy who once said this is now overseeing and approving USAID's illegal, unconstitutional destruction. Shame on you, Sec. Rubio!

Took this on Jan. 15 and completely forgot to post it. Acquired this ebike in early March 2024, and just hit 3K miles on the odo, nearly every one of those replacing a car trip. #cycling #commuter

Park City's system is not without its issues. Driver recruitment in a high-cost city has been an issue. Old Town Transit Center is usually sheltering a few unhoused people from the elements. But overall the system felt like Disney, and people rode it without hesitation. I didn't miss my car. /end

The last leg was on TRAX light rail, which is now a 45-mile system covering 51 stations and three lines. Lines run primarily on separated right-of-way, even in at-grade sections downtown (SLC streets are wide) and headways are almost always about 15 minutes. Airport station is outdoor but close.
January 14, 2025 at 3:06 PM
FrontRunner, the commuter rail line, was opened in 2008 and expanded in 2012 and 2022. It now runs the length of the Wasatch Front, Utah's most populated corridor, 88 miles from Ogden to Provo, with more expansion planned. And you can bring your bike, ebike, or scooter onboard easily.

On our last day (Saturday, hence the empty seats) we trekked from Park City Main Street to SLC airport. The High Valley "commuter" line (109) runs only every 90 minutes, but it covers nearly 30 miles in comfort and, again, is 100% free. It connects to UTA FrontRunner rail and TRAX light rail.

The Old Town Transit Center is clean, pleasant, & better than many big-city transit facilities. For example, Salt Lake Central, just over the Wasatch Front, despite being an intersection point for light rail, buses, Amtrak and commuter rail, has zero bathrooms and no climate-controlled waiting area.
January 14, 2025 at 2:49 PM
Two systems work in concert. Park City Transit runs a number of local bus lines that revolve around Old Town Transit Center. High Valley Transit runs longer-distance and express lines to further-flung destinations: Kimball, Jeremy Ranch, Heber Valley, and even downtown SLC. Most buses are electric!
January 14, 2025 at 2:39 PM
Other great highlights: digital signage with real-time info (which matched the Transit app) at least at Transit Centers and major stops. Most stops also had full shelters, and one where I waited (Fresh Market TC) had a heated shelter.
January 14, 2025 at 2:33 PM
Things I wish I could wave a magic wand and reproduce in every other transit system:
* High frequency (most routes 15-minute with lots of overlap, so practically five minutes for many origin/destination pairs.)
* High quality
* 100% free (no fares)
* Great data pushed to users via mobile.

Quick #transitnerd thread on one of the best systems I've encountered. Caveat: it's in a rich ski town, with (apparently) a lot of resources. Still, allow me to sing the praises of both Park City and High Valley Transit, with a side glance at the UTA. (📸 Park City Mtn. skiers board buses.)

Always fun to do the big Costco run on ebike + transit. Especially on a traffic-choked pre-holiday Saturday, it felt a bit like cheating. Under 3 hours to and from Sandy Springs, including lunch.
