""it is not your responsibility" does not mean that you can't still assert your needs. you can try to convince them but sometimes you do just have to go "yeah no sorry I'm not doing this. you can get with it or not, but I'm achieving my rights without you regardless. I'd love it if you came with me but if you are going to be an obstacle, that is your choice that you are consciously making for yourself & I am not going to stand for it, even if I really wish you wouldn't do that". you can leave the porchlight on, but you do not have to. you can leave the porchlight on, but they might still not come anyways. when you know you are being good and authentic and real and fighting for justice, and other people react in various ways that confuse and hurt you, it is useful to take a step back and recognize that that reaction shows that they care (in their own admittedly fucked up sorta way). you struck a nerve of truth that their ego could not hide from, so they lashed out at you instead in order to dispel the discomfort of their own conscience telling them maybe you're right. maybe they have been wrong this whole time. maybe they have gone against their own morals and done things they'd find abhorrent if it were somebody else. maybe they do need to apologize. you don't have to respond to every shitty comment made under every little post. it's still upsetting. it's still emotional vampirism. but you don't have to let it bother you further by going 50 replies down in a comment thread trying to change their mind. you really, really don't."

"the backlash is the attempt to squash the spider instead of taking the time to recognize that you are not in any real danger, and gently allow yourself to relocate the spider to safety without harming either one of you. you don't need to excuse the flailing, and this metaphor is far from perfect and actively ripping at the seams, but hopefully the point is made a little bit. people react most strongly to things they still care about. and the fact that they are so angry and upset and hostile towards you, does in fact show that they care. of course, that could be in a malignant way. you could argue that some really evil people technically "care" about the people they are actively harming. but it is still useful to be able to look at that as hmmm. so you do care, after all. so I struck a nerve. sometimes the best insight into the truthfulness of your words is the way other people respond to them. (don't get too bigheaded about it, ofc). the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off. anger is not an evil emotion. undirected, misdirected rage that is used to create malicious harm, certainly is bad. but it is not evil to have emotions. it is what you do with them. additionally, it is not your place to take full responsibility for the emotional development of other people. me saying that these people hold issues far beyond yourself is not me saying that it is your job to solve those issues for these people. they can get with it or be left behind, that's their prerogative. you can help them a little, if you want. but it's not your job. do not become emotionally invested in the outcome of other people's development in that way. most of the reason you (probably) care anyways doesn't genuinely have to do with their wellbeing, even if you think that's why you're doing it, most of why you're (probably) doing it is bc they're actively hurting you and you want that to stop!! and you're not evil for feeling that way!!"

"internet arguments become a lot less distressing when you are able to see beyond the words themselves and into the reactions and emotions that cause them not that people don't have justified reasons for the things they do, or that real injustices shouldn't evoke strong emotions, etc. etc. bc of course they do but that's not the only reason, yknow? sometimes you have to look at the way people respond to you and think, "why did this person say this?" "what is going on in their head?" "what might be going on in their life, right now and in the past? what led them here?" "is this actually a 'me' issue, am I actually wrong, or is it something in my words that hits a nail on the head for this person & they are simply responding with an outcry that is directed in the wrong direction?" "is this a 'me' issue, or does this have nothing to do with me at all? could I have said anything different to not cause this, or was anything I said going to elicit the same reaction?" you can release yourself from those constraints once you reckon with the fact that people don't argue with people about topics they truly don't care about. yes, that includes "trolls" who pretend that they don't care when you ask them. even if the "thing" they care about is slightly different than what you expect, there is still something about you that is triggering a response in them. it is triggering their cognitive dissonance. it's irksome. it's irritating. itchy. like the urge to wave at the mosquito that just landed at you. like the urge to kill the spider that just landed on you, causing you to panic."
