Fell in love with this song the instant I first heard those opening chords. A beautiful piece of industrial romanticism. (Go and Google the lyrics).

Have a feeling I’m going to be listening to “Shamrock Diaries” on the train tomorrow.
Ah damn. Terribly sad news.

One of my favourite @theraindogs.bsky.social tracks. So evocative of this time of year. Ultra-minimal fretless bass meanderings from the excellent @ianhalst.bsky.social with sparse, subtle organic textures and atmospherics from me.

One of my other favourite snippets from Ben Wardle's excellent biography of Mark Hollis is this about Polydor boss David Munns' thoughts on hearing "Laughing Stock" - an album I love to the moon and back, but which is apparently not to everyone's taste... 🤣

@theraindogs.bsky.social @garethbouch.bsky.social I'm digging this on bandcamp and especially liked Not all Who Wander so bought the digital.
Sprit of the River gave me real Pat Metheny vibes in the best way.

I’ve been unable to write / play / compose for almost a year now, but I’m okay with silence. Thanks in a large part to this astonishing guy…

Re-reading Ben Wardle’s excellent “Mark Hollis - A Perfect Silence” and once again the boss of Polydor’s reaction on hearing “Laughing Stock” makes me cackle.

PS: It’s a quite extraordinary, brilliant album. (Although clearly not for everyone 😆)

Probably my contention that the snare drum on “Ascension Day” is the most gorgeous sound ever recorded.
But that could only be on grounds of geekery / nerdism - because it’s 100% correct.
If you were running for public office which of your tweets/skeets would be the one to tank your candidacy?

They’re not “fireworks” they’re just massive explosives.
And they terrify pets, wild animals, and also even many humans.
I absolutely despise the people filling the night with such obscene, extreme noise.

I once mentioned this in a Facebook group, and the actual engineer on the album, Phill Brown, chimed in and explained exactly how he’d mic’d up the drum kit - which for a musician like me is an amazingly kind and cool thing to do. Legend. 🙌❤️
Also - the snare drum on “Ascension Day” is one of the most gorgeous sounds in the world is a hill I would die on.
Had to do a bunch of design work this afternoon, and decided to do whilst listening to “Spirit of Eden” and “Laughing Stock” (in that order).
Absolutely sublime. Masterpieces, both of them.
