Billy lived in the zoo at Victoria Park 1915-1939, surviving on half-rations during the First World War. Posthumously it was discovered that Billy was female. Another famous figure of Victoria Park was Modernist art darling Henri Gaudier-Brzeska who lived in Cardiff 1908-9 and drew the birds there.
Our iconic skeleton of Cardiff's legendary 'Billy the Seal' is on the move! She is about to undergo a conservation spruce up by our conservation intern Kaitlin, and we're looking to put her on public display next year 🙂

Rescuing taxidermy! Modern taxidermy is very tasty to insects such as clothes moths and we are having to deal with increasingly regular outbreaks affecting our exhibition specimens. After freezing we remove the damage and carry out conservation before returning to display.
