have shown sign of past abuse when we check for it that way and all love the back scratch. We are grateful that the trainers who had them before they became therapy horses were fair and kind and I wish that was the case for all horses. Thanks for your question,it got me thinking which I appreciate(:

to help create more space, but not as an instrument to harm. One of the first things I like to do with our therapy horses is actually rub them all over (like a back scratch) with a riding crop to see if they express any fear or sensitivity about it -we’re really fortunate that so far none of ours2/3

You’re welcome. We have double the reason to avoid it in our program… both because it’s unnecessary for our horses but also because it would be harmful for our human clients (often survivors of abuse themselves) to see an animal struck or beaten. So we’ll use motion or a stick as an arm extender,1/3
