Unless there is some "everyone goes to jail right now" revelation, even if it becomes apparently clear that they can't raise enough money, Altman can just decide not to blink and continue playing chicken right up to the last day. Even other labs failing wouldn't force a reckoning before that.

I have mixed feelings on whether any leak could pop it in the short term, because OpenAI is 1) privately held, 2) openly playing a game of chicken where they keep raising and burning even more money until they either go to the moon or zero, and 3) with runway to play the game for at least 6 months.

Remaining strategies to increase revenue (increase conversion from free to paid, increase monetization from paid users, etc.) are different from strategies that worked when they could 10x usage by having more people try the product for the first time. I'm just saying some low-hanging fruit is gone.

This shouldn't be surprising - there aren't that many humans. Google/Facebook faced similar saturation problems. If they have 700M MAUs, well, there's 8B humans but many are very young or very old or in a closed market like China or have no money or have already decided not to use your product.

"I regret to announce that - though, as I said, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to spend among you - this is the END. I am going. I am leaving NOW. GOOD-BYE!" he said, and was abruptly raptured.
