My guess: we will end up padding budgets with more institution-required line items like “facility use fees” to cover the shortfall. The bigger problem might be the cut to overall NSF funding
Yowza. Without massive increases to already sky-high tuition and massive cuts to administrative staff (or a football coach or two), I don't see how most American universities will survive. ICYMI, NSF overhead at many universities is 50-60%. So if you need $100k, the university asks for $150k.

Tragically, Hari Rajaram died last Thursday at his home in Baltimore. Hari was a well-known and beloved part of the earth science community, and he will be sorely missed
