I love nature, math, and finding out how stuff works. I use math to understand how nature works, and sometimes find ways to make that understanding useful (I hope).

My guess: we will end up padding budgets with more institution-required line items like “facility use fees” to cover the shortfall. The bigger problem might be the cut to overall NSF funding
Yowza. Without massive increases to already sky-high tuition and massive cuts to administrative staff (or a football coach or two), I don't see how most American universities will survive. ICYMI, NSF overhead at many universities is 50-60%. So if you need $100k, the university asks for $150k.

🧪
NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH)

Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

A lesson on the limits of ChatGPT

I tested the AI on a classic fluid mechanics exam problem - and it flunked it

When asked why it messed up it gave a fascinating answer

Will be sharing with my students to teach caution in using LLMs to solve problems

Haven't posted on here much but just got a bunch of new followers. Hi!

Also, is there a name for the feeling when a bunch of people in a room suddenly start looking in your direction and you wonder if you just sprouted an extra head?

Tragically, Hari Rajaram died last Thursday at his home in Baltimore. Hari was a well-known and beloved part of the earth science community, and he will be sorely missed

I just got asked to review a big, tough paper by someone I really respect. I plan on going deep and trying to really get to grips with the math and the ideas they represent.

Here's my question: if I livestream myself doing that, would you watch and read along with me? 🤓 (there's a preprint)

Hi, I am 43 and have advanced degrees and I simply cannot spell the word "privilege" correctly the first time. At this point I'm resigned to simply relying on a spell-checker for the rest of my life. God help me if I ever have to hand-write a DEI statement
