[#GivingTuesday thread (3/N)]

Moving on to decentralized social networks ... last year, I focused primarily on the Fediverse; this year, I'm also including the ATmosphere (although there isn't an ATmosphere logo yet, so I didn't update the image at the top of the post)

* The #mutualaid […]

[#GivingTuesday thread (2/N)]

The Nexus of Privacy primarily focuses on decentralized social networks and digital rights, so that'll be the bulk of the list. That said, we live in a society, so I'll start with several non-profits that do crucial work on shoestring budgets.

* Gender Justice […]

And, a Washington court recently ruled that data from Flock cameras are public records. As the article I started with this thread notes, "Police and city officials hope to exempt their reader data from disclosure under state public records law as part of Trudeau’s planned legislation." […]

@fight is leading a week of action opposing online id checks -- details here https://www.fightforthefuture.org/actions/stop-online-id-checks-week-of-action/
## Stop Online ID Checks WEEK OF ACTION December 1-5 TAKE ACTION ### Why we’re raising hell The invasive practice of demanding a government ID, credit card, or face scan to access websites has been growing in popularity among censorship-loving lawmakers globally. Lawmakers claim blocking sites and demanding IDs keeps kids safe. But what lawmakers claim isn’t “safe” for kids is often the very information that marginalized people need to survive: abortion care, sex ed, LGBTQ+ community, journalism, and political speech. And collecting massive amounts of our sensitive data to store in insecure databases sure isn’t safe, either. With the implementation of the UK Online Safety Act and online ID check bills across the US, we’ve seen the real impacts of age-gating: popular games, Reddit, Bluesky, and X locked away, tens of thousands of IDs leaked online, and millions restricted from seeking out life-saving information. In response, VPN usage is soaring, and with it, fascist appetites for VPN bans. Online ID checks put the open Internet we know and love at risk. We need a firestorm against them—help us build it this week. ## WHAT TO DO ### STEP 1: Sign the petition to companies demanding they don’t pre-comply with ID checks and censoring abortion info. SIGN THE PETITION ### STEP 2: Sign the petition voicing your opposition to ID check mandates that censor and suppress life-saving information on the internet! SIGN THE PETITION ### STEP 3: Share about the week of action *everywhere* Reddit, Bluesky, IG, Youtube… Tag your favorite creators in the comments! Check out our Creator Toolkit for info on how you can spread the word. CREATOR TOOLKIT ### STEP 4: Join our Reddit AMA on r/pcgaming! Experts are answering questions on everything age verification and online ID checks through a Reddit AMA. You can go ahead and start dropping your questions here and advocates working directly on this issue will be answering your questions from noon-6 EST! r/pcgaming AMA ➡️ ### STEP 5: More ways to help! Yeah, here in the US, the Pew Survey estimated that regular Threads usage was twice that of Bluesky -- and Bluesky is an order of magnitude more than Mastodon. (Of course Threads claims their usage is alnost another order of magnitude more than that, which is where I assume they're lying […]

More positively, thought, very nice to see the coverage of the work that @newsmast is doing with The Bristol Cable. The earlier coverage I had seen hadn't made it clear that they're using local-only posts for the in-community discussion!
