I just want to do science, but fascists and capitalists keep getting in the way.

Those of us who believe our role as scientists is to guide and help create a better world for all, curing disease, alleviating suffering and desperation, we must create not just an intellectual movement, but a social one that blends science with humanism and democracy.

We are the new scientists.

Our life expectancy has more than doubled over the past 150 years. What happened during this time? Largely, three things:

The late 1800s saw the invention of multiple vaccines such as the rabies and anthrax vaccines developed by Pasteur, Koch, and others.

People are living longer across the world, but large differences remain. Explore global data on life expectancy and how it has changed over time.

Dear science communicators, when talking about vaccines, be graphic, blunt, and forceful.

It is one thing for people to be anti-vax in the abstract, much harder when they are shown victims of polio, smallpox, etc.

Your job is not to coddle people who are ideologically opposed to empiricism.

Rabies is a lethal virus that when contracted, leads to strange and painful symptoms, including a fear of water, and convulsions (notice the straps in the photo).

Fortunately, in the late 19th century Louis Pasteur developed a vaccine that continues to save countless lives.

I believe that to understand a subject, you must learn its history. Patrick Kelly's series on medical history is a fascinating dive into the past. Highly recommend if this is your area of interest.
