In 1761 Clement XIII authorised the creation of the Museo Profano to exhibit the Vatican's pagan antiquities. The entrance is preceded by this remarkable sculpture found in the Villa Albani in Rome. It represents #Aion, a divinity of time with Persian origins adapted into the Roman cult of #Mithras.

The vicus of Tiddis, Algeria, was a prosperous town built by the Romans. It had a monumental gate, baths, tanneries, a temple of #Saturn and a #Mithras's shrine housed in a natural cave. In it, this phallus shaped as a cock was found.

The lion-headed god is one of the most mysterious entities known in the cult of #Mithras.

He is the god of eternal time, has four wings, a snake runs along his naked body and carries the keys that give men access to the afterlife.

There are not many novels about #Mithras, so M.J. Polelle's The Mithras Conspiracy is very welcome, especially as it draws (largely) on factual evidence to propose an interpretation of what the Mithraic cult might entail today.

#Apuleius's The Golden Ass is one of the most famous and entertaining novels of antiquity. Among his adventures, Lucius is initiated into the mysteries of Isis.

Some scholars claim that Apuleius used the Egyptian cult to conceal his own involvement in the secret cult of #Mithras.
