In 1761 Clement XIII authorised the creation of the Museo Profano to exhibit the Vatican's pagan antiquities. The entrance is preceded by this remarkable sculpture found in the Villa Albani in Rome. It represents #Aion, a divinity of time with Persian origins adapted into the Roman cult of #Mithras.

The vicus of Tiddis, Algeria, was a prosperous town built by the Romans. It had a monumental gate, baths, tanneries, a temple of #Saturn and a #Mithras's shrine housed in a natural cave. In it, this phallus shaped as a cock was found.

There are not many novels about #Mithras, so M.J. Polelle's The Mithras Conspiracy is very welcome, especially as it draws (largely) on factual evidence to propose an interpretation of what the Mithraic cult might entail today.
