And “fat free” was the hot trend. I remember a Seventeen magazine blurb showing a model “munching on a bowl of fat free pasta!” Why do I remember these things?!

The pieces started coming together when I started eating dinner at friends’ houses in my small town in Minnesota. Their moms and grandmas didn’t always have a bowl of leftover vermicelli mixed with red sauce in the fridge. Some of them didn’t even eat red sauce on their noodles because—too spicy!
