So there was one passage in the Athletic article that caught my interest. Once the news about him being detained came out, my theory was there was some sort of incident over the last day or two that brought this to light

Oh I agree - it’s just absurd to me that they realize the better position is to just say they’re stupid rather than admit they agree with what’s happening

The only way his argument would make sense is if Congress assumed the US would cease to exist immediately after the slaves were freed. Like “Oh, we’re about to shut down but wanted to make you officially part of the team first.” Which is absurd
