Just watched The Mad Miss Manton (1938) with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. She's a rich socialite, he's a reporter. Together they solve a murder and fall in love. Feels like a prototype for The Lady Eve.

Not a lot of real laughs, but it is very silly and an enjoyable watch.

Raymond Burr in a promo for Perry Mason.

I've been reading some of the Perry Mason novels lately. I should really give the TV show a try again (I used to watch them as a kid but haven't given them much of a thought in years).

Queen

Possibly Glasgow Scotland, May 30th. 1977. Again that's the date of the bootleg this comes from, but it might just as easily be another date stolen for the disc.

There is a new 4K set of 4 films Alec Guinness made for Ealing Studios. I watched the first one - The Lavender Hill Mob - tonight (1951). I'd seen it before, but it remains delightful.

I caught up with Film Masters new Blu-ray release of Kansas City Confidential today. An absolutely cracker jack little noir that focuses on the crimes patsy.

Forgot to mention I watched Warner Archives new Blu-ray of Out of the Fog (1941) last night. It is a terrific, noir-infused social drama with a fantastic cast including Ida Lupino, John Garfield, Thomas Mitchell, and John Qualen.

Watched Manhattan Melodrama this afternoon. It was surprisingly dull for a film with Clark Gable, William Powell, and Myrna Loy. And surprisingly serious for a film helmed by the guy who would direct The Thin Man just a few months later.

Caught Caught Stealing this morning. The consensus seems to be this is lesser Aronofsky, but I don’t know what they’re talking about. I thought it was great.

The Friday Night Horror Movie was Frankenstein (2025). I pretty much agree with the consensus here in that it is a stunningly beautiful film to look at with some fine performances, but the story just drag on far too long.
