Am I an architectural historian? Am I an associate professor? Why do men (some men) keep explaining things to me? Is butter my true passion? Why is breaststroke my best style? Who likes breaststroke anyway? solanomeza.com

New York City's skyline, one year ago today.

It's criminal that one year later, Governor Hochul is trying to kill off one of New York's most important climate policies ever.

My website has been updated. I will not have time to swim today. Totally unrelated.

In recent weeks, we've seen a wave of AI-generated images of white, blonde families presented by neo-fascist online accounts as models of a desirable future. As disgusting as this is, it seems no coincidence that AI is being used for reactionary propaganda

Precarity is a recipe for academic silencing of dissenting voices. The US keeps academics precarious and union protections are even worse than the UK.

I'm so glad to share a second collaboration with my dear friend Luis Durán regarding the work of Ofelia Sanou Alfaro, a Costa Rican architect and architectural historian. The piece explores Sanou's role in writing architectural history from Costa Rica. revistas.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/di...

A few weeks ago, I organized a workshop entitled “Reimagining the Future,” when one of the guests asked what worries me about the future, I replied that seeing penguins disappear was one of my top worries.

I haven't had the time to swim this week.

Yesterday, I swam 2400m. It was my first time swimming in a 43 yo body. I had had a dinner party the night before.

Today, I swam for the last time at 42 yo. 2650 m in 50 min. Far from old PBs but also far from the 1500m I swam when I returned to the pool about a year and a half ago ( I also stopped for about six months). 2650 of happiness, discipline, pain, freedom, aches and pains, consciousness, and joy. 🏊‍♀️🦈

And today, after sending 2 essays after revision, I got comments on a book chapter. Amazing, potent, and insightful comments btw.

Don't self-censor, academia be damned. Sure, this is not the best career advice, but the only advice to keep your sanity intact. Academia is full of stiff holier-than-thou idiots, don't join them.

I've submitted 2 papers within 10 days, one in Spanish and one in English. Both were revisions after the initial review. As always, I'm exhausted + fascinated by the differences in comments, tones, nuanced opinions, compliments, and critiques and how they come across so differently in 2 languages.

My dear coauthor: We only need two paragraphs to comply with the editor's comments on our piece. U write one, and I write the other. Me: Sure. Also: Let us buy some plants and search online for cute door handles. Also, me: Let's learn how to search 4 info on a Mac without a mouse or trackpad.

This is my first “bsky”, and I will dedicate it to the most important question of them all: Why do men (some men) keep explaining things to me? This is an intended reference to Solnit's essay (just in case). The next post will probably be dedicated to writing about environmental decay or swimming.

Yay! Incredibly deserved. Important to note that Claudia's work extended far beyond women in the labor market. Also pioneered the empirical revolution in labor economics more generally, and did important work on inequality — her Great Compression paper had a profound influence
