I mean, it’s not *better* that this was test run on Salvadorians first. They swept up plenty of innocent people- including kids- in their “state of emergency”

I would recommend people reseach whether your state is a stand your ground state.

Reed, the other co-founder, is a fellow creature of the night and Tori mentioned in a comment section recently he is working hard to get us dark mode ASAP

According to a Tori comment I saw on TikTok this week, they’re working on it and actually have someone who has experience with building a livestream platform collabing with them on it. So exciting!

Cthulu blessed us with some DELICIOUS shark fin soup tonight

I’m giving Skylight a try. I’m hoping we see a migration that leads to more of the content I usually enjoy on TikTok

This is so cool! At some point will we be able to view all videos under a sound like we can on TikTok?

Slipped into a bigger bill*

*But the most high profile Dems in charge of bridging the gap to “the youth” (Jeff Jackson and Cory Booker) openly supported the ban and said nothing about the aid part until last week. They had a built in excuse and still opted for the “China Bad” route

Given that TikTok is 60% owned by international venture capitalists, I’d also say don’t rule out the possibility of them saying fuck it and cutting him a check and, like, a 2% stake so money keeps flowing. We all know that’s the only thing Trump actually cares about
January 19, 2025 at 10:13 AM
No one is betting on TikTok being back for good. The general sentiment is wanting TikTok back long enough for a competitor to be born and so we all have a more central way of knowing where we’re going next
January 19, 2025 at 10:09 AM
That reprieve had no legally binding guarantees. Honestly it seems like regardless of what TikTok did or didn’t want to do, Oracle would have never played ball with that situation
January 19, 2025 at 10:09 AM
Hopefully we won’t be here for too long. TikTok folks liked the short(ish) form videos and the personalized algorithm for a reason.

I think the most realistic scenario, at least for the younger crowd, is back to TikTok for 4-6 months while the next big thing makes itself known
January 19, 2025 at 10:07 AM
For some odd reason, I don’t think the legal department at Oracle, who manages the US servers, was going to green-light continued operations on a “trust me bro” from the president who enthusiastically signed the ban
January 19, 2025 at 9:52 AM
And yet, they still wouldn’t have their app. Do you maybe see why, when people mobilize in mass scale and get told essentially to fuck off, they might not be willing to play ball with the same system to support the people who TOLD them to fuck off a few months earlier?
January 19, 2025 at 9:50 AM
I mean, besides the KPop fans we talked about that for literally a week up to the ban
January 19, 2025 at 9:47 AM
I mean, this drastically underestimates how disenchanted most Americans are with the system. If anything, the ban passing and being signed in the first place was a *lot* of people’s last straw bc it proved none of what we were told to do was worth anything
January 19, 2025 at 9:46 AM
You know, never mind that including captions ON your video, or at minimum having them enabled and relatively proof read) as well has been standard TikTok ettiequte for almost 3 years bow
January 19, 2025 at 9:43 AM
It’s less the text posts and more the sense of humor. The TikTok joke ecosystem moves so rapidly that seeing people still say “drumpf” is literally nuclear levels of cringe.

But there is a TikTok alternative that is currently in testing that ties into BlueSky so who knows🤷🏻‍♀️
January 19, 2025 at 9:38 AM
The thing about TikTok was the reason it was so left leaning was bc so many of the users weren’t party affiliated to begin with. It’s why certain topics gained so much traction when the Democrats had failed on those matters for years, there was no party loyalty to complicate call outs
January 19, 2025 at 9:36 AM
As someone who has been incredibly active on PolitiTok for years, it is a lot more complicated than he is even capable of comprehending. TikTok was far less “Pro-Trump” than it was “here is what we want” with an list of demands that went largely ignored.
January 19, 2025 at 9:33 AM
It’s more likely it was decided by Oracle, who hosts the US servers for TikTok, Lemon8, and CapCut. Continued operations relied on essentially a “trust me bro” from Biden, and it’s very likely Oracle didn’t want to even toe the line of getting too close to midnight
January 19, 2025 at 9:18 AM
Lemme put it this way, when my future kids come of age and ask about the coming anarchy from the under 35’s, the quote “tic tack toe, a winner” will absolutely be included in the story
January 19, 2025 at 9:12 AM
I find this a really interesting take, as someone who has been active on multiple sites for years, because IME TikTok was fact checking the rumors that got spread on pre-Elon Twitter often days before anyone even tried over there. And we were talking about Trump’s involvement last week
January 19, 2025 at 9:08 AM
The law was specifically drafted with a 1 time 90 day extension clause that Biden very explicitly opted not to use to “respect the transfer of power”.
January 19, 2025 at 9:05 AM
I mean, “I won’t punish you if you break the law, trust me bro” from the guy who signed the ban (bc in this case, the origin is moot, he signed it and was enthusiastic about it) is a pretty compelling reason to use the shut down as a massive eff you to the administration
