The North Atlantic right whale, on the edge of extinction, is showing early signs of a slow recovery.

New data from the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium, New England Aquarium, and NOAA estimate around 384 individuals in 2024 - a 2.1% increase from the previous year.

Along California’s coast, sea otters are quietly reshaping ecosystems - controlling crabs that once damaged eelgrass beds, allowing meadows to thrive. Offshore, in the kelp forests of Monterey Bay, otters feast on purple urchins, helping these underwater forests recover after years of decline.
