I'm a professional DM and a retired local con organizer. I write adventures and my own multi-campaign world, create all manner of homebrew, and generally do everything D&D.
I kinda had the inkling they weren't enjoying the games, but my response was to prep things directly appealing to their character--they explicitly asked for tough bosses. And then got frustrated when those bosses hit them.
I just wish I'd done the "hey, what's not working?" sooner, honestly.

I don't need to be the person explaining that any good BBEG has an answer to someone walking up and punching them, that the entire party deserves a say in how encounters are resolved, or that to-hits in 5e scale well beyond AC in the later levels.
I hope they find their game.

I don't have room for chaff cards, but I always give everyone around me a chance to claim them before recycling. Can't imagine ripping them up or trashing them if someone else wants them.
