Rattlesnake bites =/= certain death. For the western diamondback for example, the mortality rate of untreated bites is between 10 and 20%. And when death occurs it’s usually 6-48 hours after the bite. But if there’s a film camera near, it’s apparently instant death every time.

Speaking of which: the biggest myth in Westerns is that rattlesnakes are super-venomous and mean instant death. Not true.

I am not saying my Swedish ancestors who emigrated did not flail around like idiots, but they generally survived and did pretty well for themselves, even the ones who went West.

Hint: there were poisonous snakes, dirty water and horses here too.
