By day i'm an Infrastructure Architect and focusing on on-prem infrastructure automation and provisioning.. (Think of make it more like AWS.. but with off the shelf shit).

at night i'm #batman with his homelab. Just not as rich or cool.
I also like that MooseFS has storage transitions. You can tier your storage based on labels. I have 3 labels NVME, SSD, HDD. You assign a storage class and tell the class to create files on NVME label move to the SSD label and then archive it to the HDD label

Finally moved over to #MooseFS and put Versity Object Store Gateway on top of it. I also set up a side little network that splits replication traffic and client serving traffic that took way to fucking long.

I spent way to much time learning about the SSD"s i bought off of ebay. It looks like when I exhaust the cache on my Micron 5210 it halts everything else while it does whatever it needs to to flush the cache.. Moral of the story! Don't fill up the cache!, this thing stops!!!

Mini pc's really did make the #homelab hit different!!! Until you wan to squeeze every cent of performance out of the things you bought to put in it and running into why they are consumer grade stuff!!

I'm enjoying #Cubefs but it's clearly a heavier op model than #moosefs. Since most of my stuff is #homelab stuff, It feels like I can foot gun it more with #cubefs and I just don't want to take that risk. So here I go migrating back to #moosefs then adding a s3 gateway atop it.

Wrapping up the week with an #Incus release!
Incus 6.18 is now out, bringing support for systemd credentials, file operations on custom volumes, MacOS VM agent support and more!

Incus 6.18 has been released
Introduction The Incus team is pleased to announce the release of Incus 6.18! This is a reasonably busy release with quite a few smaller releases in every corner of Incus so there should be something...

My distributed file system of choice right now is CubeFS. It heavily relies on things having replicas of data. It can only move the data off your old disk if there is another copy to serve reads while the move is in progress. I created a volume with 1 replica ( Media ) ... Yea I'm learning todays!

As a homelab sysadmin I have two states:

* Everything is working fine and I'm bored

* Everything is broken and I'm upset

Heads up for the #homelab / #selfhosting community: #minio has gone source-only and will no longer build new docker images, and the latest version of the image contains an 8.1/10 privilege escalation CVE. You may want to update to building the image yourself or switch out minio for something […]

I should probably get into a document management system and start getting serious about keeping them. I mean everything seems so accessible that if I don't have it.. just use your email!!! Anyways. What's your recommendations?

My latest distributed file system of choice #cubefs, been running very well. I had to vibe code my way though a vibe coded python / Ansible plug-in.

Thank the #AI gods for the security vulnerability coding in my #homelab! The updates and backups autooomated thooooo!!!

I can see why this Local LLM game can be fun and suck you in. But what in the actual fuck! If you don't have 48gigs of vRAM and a card that cost 7 million dollars.. its sort of useless!

Now I gotta figure out how to get 7 million dollars.

Most of my simple ansible automation got hit with gpg keys of grafana and incus changing a.. Took me a minute to find out how to refresh them as I do not do this often..

Things are green again

I stared out putting tailscale everywhere! Even internal traffic gets encrypted and sent around blah blah blah.. That novelty is starting to wear off. Cool idea, but for a #homelab.. feels to much like, "Show me how big yours is" ( No Diddy ). Starting to pull that back.

Question for the #homelab hommies! Do any of you guys do tiered storage. Meaning you age out data in an automated way? Something like hot to colder to coldest!

If so! teach me your ways.

I got into distributed file systems for the #homelab. They just seem more flexible than having 1 zfs machine housing everything. I'm finding out distributed anything needs speed. Now I'm thinking about more hardware.

This hobby wild!

I'm an ansible in the #homelab with a sprinkle of #tofu. I found something called #dagu which is fire. You still need to write more yaml for it to work. I took a look again at #semaphore. So now I'm thinking about switching to semaphore to not need yaml to manage yaml.

Bruh! Already ran into a thing with #cubefs. I'm not sure why one of my ssd didn't mount. So cube marked it as bad. Once I got the disk fixed. It didn't say OK I'm good. I had to decom the drive in cube.. Which took forever cause it moved data.

No re-balance feature either.

Moving to a new storage system wasn't that bad with #cubefs and my media. If you into distributed storage stuff, this is not a bad one to try. Shut down my test of #seaweedfs and now I gotta move my spinning rust to cube to get the space back.

The "Linux Iso" Migration to #cubefs has started. This is where those small n100 - n305 cpu's really hit a wall. The only time you want things to move cause its a lot .. It doesn't move.. as fast.

It's going! Now I need to change all the mount points everywhere
