Street art spotted in Columbus this weekend. I suppose this is technically defacing public property, which is in general not good. But it brought me more joy than a planned art installment. Art is complicated, I guess. And a small surprise chuckle is needed nowadays.

Someone has hidden tiny yellow ducks all over the lab. Dozens of them. I assume for April fools. It's amazing.

The vibes coming off this bird as it watched me eat my lunch today...

Ohio! Time to stand up! Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Repost even if you're not in Ohio.

Science benefits us all and it is in danger. We need to shout this message loud and clear.

Lab Mistake of the Year 2024 is in and it's a tie for the first time in the lab's history! Postbac India Carter ties with grad student Nidhi Devasthali. In another first, Nidhi is our first ever double winner. She was also our champ last year.

They each got bragging rights and a cool brain light.

Prepping for State of the Lab address. Here's our breakdown of costs by category. After those 1st years, proportions hold pretty steady. Though I do notice the % spent on materials keeps shrinking. A lot of that is expanding f&a as we shifted from startup to grants. But salaries seem pretty stable.

Interesting screen shot from the original paper referred to above. The faculty surveyed were science and engineering faculty at "top US research universities"

It's holiday season in the Kirby lab. This seasonal lab member joins us as the result of a previous year white elephant gift exchange.

Since this particular paper is also on biorxiv, I'll try a rough comparison. In month 1 on biorxiv, it got ~500 views. That's still many fewer views than the journal oa articles got in 1-2 weeks. In this wildly unscientific comparison I have done, for views: journal oa>journal subscription>biorxiv.

A comparison: access metrics from #neuroscience papers published over one week, some open access, some behind a paywall. The distribution does not even overlap.

Why would I look at this? Why else? One of our recent papers is in the left column, couldn't swing the oa fee this time. Sigh
