No matter where you live in America, there's a tornado radar system in your region scanning the skies to keep you informed. But the aging technology, which dates back to 1988, is in desperate need of an upgrade. https://cbsn.ws/4lug6Qf
Record tornado warnings strain aging U.S. radar system, but NOAA is testing costly upgrades
When "minutes matter" in severe weather, faster forecasting technology is crucial for saving lives, says one NOAA meteorologist.

As a farewell, here are a few of the most impressive and interesting views that GOES-16 provided over the last 7 years...

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

No guarantees of open positions or of when, but if you were just laid off from NOAA/NWS, reaching out may be worth a shot. ECCC appears to be opening their meteorologist slots more widely than ever before. Gotta be willing to move to Canada and if you speak any French you will have advantages :)

“But Accu-Weather!!” They get their data from NWS. “But my local TV station has their own radar on a truck!” Sure, and they use it to fill small geographic gaps in the broader radar coverage that’s provided by NWS. “My weather app!” It’s getting its data from NWS.
In fact, though this is not widely known, most or all private weather companies in U.S. (including forecasts that you see on TV or your favorite app) are built directly atop backbone of taxpayer-funded instrumentation, data, predictive modeling, & forecasts provided by NOAA.

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.
For-Profit Companies Can’t Easily Replace NOAA’s Weather-Forecasting Prowess
Replicating the abilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fleet of weather satellites would take time and a lot of money—and expose private companies to a large amount of…

You know why these guys are so willing to flagrantly and openly break the law? Because they’ve been doing it for years, testing the waters, seeing what they could get away with—and they got away with all of it. This is the consequence of no consequences and an injustice system.

Absolutely appalling - the majority of media companies, both traditional and social, have totally capitulated. I have very little hope for the future of this country
Just days after Trump returned to the White House, Instagram is censoring abortion content. This is what Aid Access' account looks like right now - posts about how to get abortion medication has been blurred out.

Scientists are warning that the world has entered a dangerous new era of chaotic floods, storms and fires made worse by human-caused climate change. The wildfires in Los Angeles are just the latest examples of this extreme weather.

ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change.
