Diagrams of my #process for making the 'Down The Street' #ExperimentalPhotography project using an #AutisticPerception to 'roll' up the street, producing a new view of the city, showing how different parts are interconnected. #ActuallyAutistic #35mm

I'm still trying to best rearrange this collage of 20 individually exposed 8x10 inch #SilverGelatin. Exposed one by one over a period of 4-5 hrs, done in a multi-lense #CameraObscura and #darkroom. #AutisticPerception #ActuallyAutistic #Analog

The camera installation took up the entire space [4x5 ft, approx], I would open the door, pull the camera onto the sidewalk and then invite people into it, using it as a theater, education and performance space, and as a physical camera.

See more photos and the MERT camera via the link in the bio.

In 2014 I was invited to fill out Front Art Space on Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan. I built my first multi lensed camera obscura as the center piece for the show MERT: Multiple Exposure in Real Time.

A rendering, hand sketch, and digital collage, showing the concept of the camera, how art works, and performance would be experienced by the audience, moving screens around, to construct their own experience.

A photo of me inside the informal darkroom. It is very rudimentary, no running water, no temperature control. Here, I developed unique silver gelatin's capturing the ephemeral qualities of the space. See previous post or the link in bio to see these 📸 @panthealee.bsky.social

Photo of a lens mount. One lens is mounted in a sheet of wood, attached to the wall, the other on a smaller piece hinged so the audience can add it and thus change the focal length of the projection they are seeing, allowing the audience control over their experience.

The wall as seen from the audience side (top) and the performer side (bottom).
June 5, 2025 at 2:24 PM
The construction is a simple wood frame built on site, concealed in blackout material. The lenses are the only penetration made to the wall, which enables the projections into the audience space. Top image, a 3D diagram show the design of the wall, below a photo of the build wall on site.

Given the camera has multiple lenses, the projected images overlap and show different aspects of the space. Here I’m standing in the center holding up two screens capturing different projects, and screens around my capture even other projects.

A diagrammatic plan. The space is split into, the dark side is where the audience will see the projects, while the lit side is where performers would act and mix with the projections from the exterior.

To me there’s something almost straightforward about a multi lensed camera obscura, but I realize that they are likely unfamiliar to most; so allow me to show a bit of the process here, using the camera obscura at the center of the exhibition How Do We Project. The camera operates similar to a...
