At Hell’s Highway, the Netherlands, Red Cross nurse Koos cared for both Allied and German wounded. Working alongside German medical staff, she grappled with the daily question: who was friend, and who was foe? Her courage and dedication saved countless lives.

🌾 In WWII, Allied pilots shot down over the Netherlands sometimes hid in the reed fields of the Noordoostpolder.
Originally planted to prepare the land for reclamation, the reeds became an unexpected safe haven in wartime. We’ll talk about this in our next pod.

In 1943, 5 Dutch escaped in a tiny boat, Yvette. They rowed past German and crossed the North Sea.
After days a British trawler welcomed them aboard with dry clothes, cigarettes, biscuits, and a full English breakfast.Today, Yvette is preserved at the museum in Overloon.

During WW2 a KLM engineer flees the occupied Netherlands to go to Britain and work for MI9. He is trained to become a spy. In August 1944 he is parachuted back into the Netherlands to set up pilot escape lines. Read his story.
