CHARACTERISTICS A circular island in a circular Lake: both a human creation and a wilderness under pressure. THE STRIKINGLY CIRCULAR shape of this remote, wild island in a strikingly circular lake is tell-tale evidence of a falling star. It was here, 214 million years ago, that a 5-kilometre- (3-mile-) wide meteorite smashed into the Earth. The force of the impact turned the rock around and deep below to liquid. It was one of the largest impacts our planet has endured and formed a crater with several rings about 100 kilometres (60 miles) wide. The island of René-Levasseur, nicknamed the Eye of Quebec, is 530 kilometres (329 miles) north of Quebec City and sits in the middle of this crater. Until the damming of the Manicouagan River, it was flanked by two crescent-shaped lakes. Once the dam was completed the lakes were drowned and merged, forming a spherical reservoir that is also the deepest lake in Canada.

Small islands are natural prisons: easy to monitor and hard to escape from. Ognenny Ostrov, 'Fire Island', is a high-security facility housing nearly 200 murderers. It's a very small rhomboid-shaped island 380 kilometres (around 235 miles) east of Saint Petersburg in a lake that is surrounded by immense forests. The sides of the island are high walls, painted white, that plunge straight into the water, which is frozen for much of the year. There is a long, narrow and rickety plank bridge connecting Fire Island to a bigger island, Ostrov Sladkii, or 'Sweet Island, where the prison officers and their families live.
