8/ 'Mask shows' continue to be used regularly in Russia, often against political dissidents and suspected supporters of Ukraine. There is no longer much threat against the lives of officers, but they have learned how useful masks can be as a means of state intimidation.

The irony: Makhno commanded 20,000 fighters against Russian imperial control a century ago. The Bolsheviks twice allied with him, then betrayed him both times. He died in Paris exile after refusing to submit to Moscow.

During WWII, Germany tried to cut deals with Western allies. Those efforts were "consistently rebuffed." Today, a Trump-Putin deal appears "more likely than not."

What's missing now that existed then? A singular focus on defeating the aggressor.
