In the early 17th century, English colonists founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a Puritan stronghold. Fleeing religious persecution in England, they aimed to create a godly commonwealth with intertwined church and civil governance. Roger Williams, a minister and theologian from England, arrived in 1631 into a world of strict orthodoxy. Williams, initially accepted by Puritan leaders, alarmed them by opposing the integration of church and state. He argued that civil authorities should not punish religious beliefs, asserting that true faith must be voluntary and government enforcement of religion was unjust and harmful. He also condemned taking Native American lands without fair purchase, demanding justice and equity. The core of his belief was the conviction that liberty of conscience is a divine mandate rather than a civil privilege. In The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution, he stated: “God does not demand a uniformity of religion to be enacted and enforced in any civil state.” Williams' views led to conflict with colonial leaders. In 1635, he was banished from Massachusetts for his opinions. Instead of returning to England, he fled and found refuge with the Narragansett tribe. In 1636, Williams founded Providence Plantation with land bought from the Narragansetts. It was a settlement dedicated to freedom of conscience, allowing individuals to worship as they chose without an established church. Catholics, Protestants, Quakers, Jews, and others found refuge there in a time when such tolerance was virtually unknown. Williams had a broad vision for religious liberty, advocating that individuals outside the Christian faith also deserved civil protection. In his 1644 treatise, The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution, he wrote: “𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵...𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩, 𝘑𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩, 𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪-𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.” According to Williams, forced faith was not only unjust but also sinful. He cautioned: “𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘴.” This belief, grounded in both theology and politics, formed the foundation of Providence and later Rhode Island. In 1644, Williams secured a charter for Rhode Island, making it the first colony with an explicit commitment to religious freedom and the separation of church and state. His writings laid moral and philosophical groundwork that would echo more than a century later in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which declares that : “𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘸 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘩𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘧.” In 1644, Roger Williams secured a charter for Rhode Island, making it the first colony dedicated to religious freedom and separation of church and state. His writings influenced the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, protecting laws from establishing religion or prohibiting its exercise. While often overlooked during his life, Williams laid the foundations for American democracy by promoting a pluralistic republic and removing coercion from belief. Williams' story is a key part of American history, highlighting that the U.S. was founded on the principle of freedom of belief. Roger Williams not only envisioned religious freedom, but he also actively practiced it, significantly influencing the course of American history.
