@guildfordhoward.bsky.social Town bridge on Saturday. Green party chap holding up an anti reform placard near them. I went over and had a chat and said I agreed with him. We had a nice convo until I said I was Labour. He went a wee bit cool then 😂

Imagine my surprise as a man whose family goes back 200 years working in the Durham coal mines to find out through ancestory dot com that I not only descend from John of Gaunt (and therefore his kingly father) but through two of his Beaufort children. #history #familyhistory #beaufort #ancestory

Three recommendations if you're into fifteenth century English history. The Matthew Lewis and Philippa Langley titles in have really made me reassess my views on Richard III's guilt. Shadow King made me feel sorry for that sad fool Henry of Lancaster, poor sod never stood a chance. #HistoryBookChat

The mighty Guildford City found themselves 0-2 down but fought back to claim a good point with a 2-2 draw. Photos will be posted later #football

Recent Kindle purchases. Have actually just finished The White Ship and The Woodvilles, both excellent and entertaining reads. Looking forward to the other two - not quite my era of greatest interest and research these days but both books look good. #HistoryBookChat

This amazing book arrived this week. Graham Turner's work is simply awe inspiring. This is a coffee table book worth getting a coffee table for. Absolutely awesome. If you have any interest in medieval warfare, in particular the Wars of the Roses you need to get it. #HistBookChat

They are giving this away in the chip shop in Westborough, Guildford. A lunatic conspiracy theorists news sheet that is totally risible. Interesting that are elements here that the far left could nod along too as well. Just goes to show.

Spent a few months working on my family tree via a few of the online ancestor sites. I actually had a Danny Dyer moment (if you know you know) when I discovered I am directly descended from this chap. Here he is, his figurine one of those that feature on the tomb of his father in Westminster Abbey

I got my Ethnicity DNA results back and I was really happy and relieved at the results. Having done my family tree, tracing many ancestors back 800 years i can totally see why I have these DNA results.

Another one dug out of the archive. In my early days I was nuts for the footy and when #nufc were not playing I started going to watch #Gatesheadfc. It just happened that this 82/83 season was a brilliant one for the Heed, winning promotion to the top level of non-league.

This match from the #nufc League Cup loss against Leeds in 1982 is of no importance other than the fact that a teenage me is in the crowd in the background. I was of course immensely proud of this at the time 😂

I didn't have family or friends who were interested in going to football so it took me until January 1982 for me to decide to head to St James' Park by myself for my first ever Newcastle match. We lost but from here on I was hooked 100% for better or worse.

Over the past 40 years I've picked up a match programme from almost every #football match I've ever been to (most have gone walkies sadly). Out of those I still have, let's pick out a handful that really mean something to me. This is my 1st trip to Wembley on a school trip
