Why talk to text for writing is a porch oyster for me:

My family keeps laughing at my texts because even when my voice and enunciation are fine, the words I choose don’t translate as intended.

For example, this:

In honor of the late, great (nay, incredible) Madeline Kahn and the joy she brings me when I see or hear her sing it, the SOTD is…

“I’m Tired,” from the iconic Mel Brooks film “Blazing Saddles.”

I needed to start today with a hearty laugh, obviously. Because WHY

Apologies. This shift has made me a saltier little lady than usual.

And no. These aren’t the salt and pepper shakers you’re looking for…

Last night I discovered I’m not half bad at singing “Memory” from Cats.

Just wait until I remember to learn the other half.

And yes, this is a text I had Jim send me last night, when I was singing and suddenly realized I do not know the middle of the song…

I love nature and the outdoors.

I just wish the feeling was mutual.

The ethereal “Go Outside” by Cults helps me idealize the concept of being one with Mother Nature.

In reality, I know full well that b*tch h*tes me.

Hearing anything by Chicago always reminds me of my father. Here is a picture of him, riding his bike when he was a kid. He always loved being outside and active.

One of his absolute favorite weekend activities was playing softball in local parks.

Often in life and in love, there is a distinct shift.

I’d listened to “This Side of Paradise” by Coyote Theory many times in passing through the kitchen, as the song is on my son’s playlists.

The intuitive instrumentation and relatable lyrics of “Rule # 4- Fish in a Birdcage,” by Fish in a Birdcage, make it the #songoftheday .

More than once, I have been confined somewhere I never belonged in the first place. Where I was never expected (or able) to break free, let alone thrive.

It was in the days before GPS, and we got lost on our way to the hotel. Having now lived in Utah, I more fully understand how we got turned around.

So the song of the day is “Where the Streets Have No Name,” by U2.

Today, I could post one of the songs played or performed at my father’s funeral.

But instead, I’m focusing on how much my father loved music and attending live concerts.

In honor of my father and the profession he loved, the song of the day is “Please Mr. Postman,” The Marvelettes, 1961.

“My mother once said that my father has more faith in the Yankees and mailmen than he does in God.”

In Memoriam
Edward S.
1949-2002

A few of us are gathering for an annual lunch celebrating my father’s life today. And the Academy Awards are being held tonight.

My dad loved movies of all different genres, and he enjoyed watching awards ceremonies like the Oscars.

The song today is “New York State of Mind,” by Billy Joel, for so many reasons.

My father was born in one of the villages along the Hudson River. He was raised in another.

Closing out the month with Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Their rendition of “Endless Love” floored me when I first heard it. Dynamic, heartfelt, beautiful.

Oh, to be as calm as Starlight is, chilling in the sunroom.

Working on more poetry. One is about medical trauma, the other is political.

I hope someday I’ll be in a place to write more joyous things. But for now, I need to process the events of the past several years…

Woke up with “To Be With You” by Mr. Big in my head, though it’s unclear why.

The piece is sweet, determined, and spirited. So I’m gonna roll with it…

Happy Sunday. 🌞

My five year old was a forward thinker. Here is his depiction of George Washington (or as I like to call him, Funkalicious G).

I wrote a poem about the ideals of liberty. It’s up on the blog.

Whenever I hear “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel, my heart returns to holding hands with my fellow classmates in junior high as we sang the piece a cappella.

It’s one of those songs that is deeply affecting even if you have limited personal knowledge of romance.
