This is Frida Adler, Bertha's older sister. Frida worked as a maid and visited her family often. One day she received a message that said "Don't come" because they'd been arrested by the Gestapo. She was in Brussels when it was liberated in 1944. She immigrated to the US in 1946.

Boulder by Eva Baltasar 💙📚
When Boulder's partner Samsa wants to have a baby, her world turns upside down. The imagery in this slim novel is fantastic and I loved the Icelandic setting.

Bertha Adler was 11 when the Germans occupied Liege, the Belgium city she lived in with her parents and two sisters. Catholic friends tried to help them with false papers to keep the safe. The Germans found them in May of 1944 and she was gassed two days later.

A book that makes it hard to know what is real and what is a dream.
💙📚

So much to unpack in this novel, with haunting imagery and unforgettable relationships. I will definitely be rereading!!

Perfect reading for Black History Month 💙📚

This research disputes the prevailing belief that white southern women were too delicate to be pro-slavery. This shows the myriad of ways w. southern women participated in and benefited from slavery in the south.

Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata 💙📚
I was totally annoyed by the MMC in this early 20th century Japanese novel. This book reminded me a lot of Norwegian Woods by Haruki Murakami.

What can you say about the world in the years leading up to Anne Frank’s death? Other than it feels eerily similar to today 💙📚

After Me Comes the Flood by Sarah Perry 💙📚

After reading her debut novel, I am now a Sarah Perry completist!

In this novel, John Cole's car breaks down while trying to visit his brother and he comes upon a mysterious house in which its strange habitants are seemingly expecting him.

Hello #BookSky! Another recent finish is Guide Me Home by Attica Locke. It's the third (and final?!) book in the Hwy 59 series. All three books follow Darren Matthews, a Black Texas Ranger in East Texas, the same part of the world where I grew up. ⬇️
