So, in order to represent something we have to know what is being represented, what is not being represented, what signs/codes have been used, what elements have been selected, who is in charge of the representation and to whom is it targeted at.

According to the representation theory, reality is complex and needs to be simplified. Representation is a selection of signs in order to represent what we want to represent.

a PARADIGM is a mix of signs that creates a mini universe of meaning, a collection of related associations.

This advertisement represents the paradigm of a "cowboy".
Either way, the myth of masculinity has many different paradigms in itself.

Connotation: association of concepts in a gesture or sign.

There are different levels of meaning.
With a sign we can make up or give another meaning.
