(Part 1) In 1998-99, I was stationed in Panama as the U.S. prepared to hand the canal back to Panama. Our focus seemed to be winding down, with FedEx planning to turn an Air Force Base into a hub—the only major project I recall. Meanwhile, China was already busy rebuilding the Colón port.

Here’s my confusion: If Trump’s promise is to eliminate government inefficiencies and slash positions to save money, and if his tariffs are supposedly bringing in so much revenue that they’ll pay off the debt, then why the sudden urgency about the debt ceiling?
