The fact that for reasons I was flying to Germany with a load of German colleagues at the exact time the match was playing, and seeing their faces when they switched on their phones as we landed, was something to behold
Germany beating Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup, in Rio, remains the funniest match I've ever watched
Everybody should absolutely view this as an invitation to drop your spiciest soccer takes.

The salaryman’s search for fulfilment during the heights of summer “lull” leads to some desperate measures being taken
Lunchtime. I have added a ‘soft egg’. #softegg

It may have been happening for yonks and this is only the first tournament I’ve noticed it but “player out” and “player in”???

Absolutely a first world problem for me and I expect only the tiniest of violins but maybe my experience and outlook illustrates why people with less to invest are also reluctant to be encouraged into something that carries “risk”

Future Chris: A or B?

….. and I’m incredibly fortunate but it’s still scary. Am I saving enough? Am I doing it right? When do I want to retire? What kind of life do I want to have? And then even with the stocks and shares investing I do (pension) a get an annual letter saying I COULD get £xx a year. Is that good? Dunno!
Last brain fart: My parents retired about 15 yrs ago, had saved hard in cash ISAs, a small private pension (buy an annuity in 2010) and loads of Tesco shares my Mum got at discount. Even they’ve been through the wringer in that time. They do alright but are v cautious with their money….
….. and trying to picture what the future asset’s value could be AND NEEDS to be seems for the birds. Especially when at the end of it all so long as someone put all the right disclaimers in their letters it’s basically me who’ll fuck my future up!!!

By a country mile my best financial investment is the place I live in and that has been entirely passive. The idea of having that (even if value reduces, it should still exist) vs the chance of losing all my money in an AI company or a boring ass portfolio of diversified stocks that vaporises….

Boasting that I’m wilfully ignorant on t’internet ain’t a great look but given my line of work one might assume I’ve at least some level of sophistication to my financial outlook. However I’m very scared of opting for something that could become 0 vs stuffing full my Junior Griffin Saver 0.01% a/c

…. Encourages a risk aversion even if totally irrational. No amount of people telling me “well actually over x years the stock market out performs x, y or z”convinces me because even if I’m trying to transform at least some of my wealth into a valuable future asset I’m more scared of tomorrow….

Serving as a pension fund trustee made me realise Britons really hate the idea that their money has 'gone done', even if it's just a temporary blip.

Investing is just fundamentally unBritish, unlike the noble art of becoming a slum landlord and taking responsibility for fixing someone's boiler.

Why did I check the quote tweets on this? I knew they were going to depress me, just wall to wall people who are going to be poorer than they should be in old age who think that “invest more in stocks and shares ISAs” is some kind of spiv’s charter and not, you know, important advice.

A truly special place. Paul has so much time for everyone. Had a lot of repairs, advice and even a couple of Perry decaled bikes from here. Must drop by before it shuts

Sadiq Khan / TfL gave the go ahead for a road tunnel without building an equivalent fixed cycle bridge/tunnel in east london … so critical mass took things into their own hands and turned the Silvertown tunnel into a cycle route.

Two weeks worth of #marathontraining updates for you lucky people tonight! Training going well, nice long run today after a painful and unemployable one midweek.
Missed Parkrun last week and was 10mins short on one run.
31.6 km last week up to 56 km this week

As they say in France, j’agree
First gig of 2025: a jazz interpretation of Radiohead’s Kid A, led by Rick Sampson at the Jazz Cafe. I have some ill-formed thoughts on the cleverness and variety of the arrangements, but mainly I thought it was great to see a full house on a Monday evening in January for…anything, really.

So a #running q: bought a new model of trainers I’ve really enjoyed running in, Saucony Ride (versions 15 & 17). The new ones, worn c 4 times, c 30km total, are absolutely killing me. Pain through the sole and outside of feet. Stick with it or ditch? I’ve a marathon start April

Jeffing: the run-walk method that can get you to the marathon finishing line
Have seen some of my friends refer to Jeffing on their Stravas etc but no idea what it actually was till today! Might become a Jeffer 👍!

Why yes I am doing the same miserable shitbag routine here as I did on the other place before getting bored of posting at all
Guess I’m gonna have to leave Bluesky now just when it appeared to be tolerable: someone’s tweeted a Cold War Steve thing into my timeline
