Mike Gillespie knew Ben Orloff had the stuff. Yes, the famed coach believed in the Anteater star’s ability on the field, setting records in 2009.

But what Gillespie saw was Orloff’s future, a future for UC Irvine baseball.

Today is a good day.

I graduate from USC Annenberg with a master’s in specialized journalism at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum tonight.

I am in the @latimes.com sports section with Tuesday’s Dodgers gamer.

And my thesis was confirmed by my final committee member.

Pinch me!

Back at Dodger Stadium with a full LAT crew tonight for Freddie Freeman bobblehead night, the same day Freeman (ankle) has been activated off the Injured List.

Dodgers are 10-4 and host the Cubs (9-6) after an up-and-down road trip to the East Coast.

If you have any idea for pitches, or outside-of-the-box sports stories untold in Los Angeles or nationally, feel free to send me an email here: benjamin.royer@latimes.com

Spent the afternoon at TuS Makkabi Berlin e.V., a fifth-division football club and the only with Jewish identity in Berlin.

Makkabi Berlin defeated TSG Nuestrelitz 3-2.

Story to eventually come on football and Jewry in modern-day Germany.

We made it to Berlin — and are on our way to dinner with the Irish Times’ Berlin correspondent Derek Scally.

Moderating the Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting panel on Monday with my “fellow” USC Annenberg Selden Ring Investigative Journalism fellow Mallika Seshadri.

Hope to see you there as we celebrate and honor Katey Rusch and Casey Smith, and their courageous journalism.

For a school that has had low public political organization since encampments were removed in May, the University of Southern California seems quite open to having right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk and his Turning Point USA-hosted “American Comeback Tour” in the campus’ center.

Frame it? I think so.

Exceptionally grateful for the opportunity to learn from and work with professor Mark Schoofs.

The inaugural Open Source Journalism Conference hosted by USC Annenberg & @hrcberkeley.bsky.social was not only captivatingly educational, but it was also great to work the event.

Can’t wait for 2026!

Arrived at Pauley Pavilion for No. 5 Michigan State and No. 6 UCLA’s meet — the first ever women’s gymnastics meet broadcast on Fox.

You know it’s a big day when UCLA opens up the seating section behind bars.

I’ll have updates and a wrap-up to come for @latimes.com.

Never been to UCLA vs USC at the Galen Center and now that the game is across the street from class, why not now?

In fact, this is my first UCLA men’s basketball road game (but I’m fairly sure watching UCLA play at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas aughta count for something).
January 28, 2025 at 2:41 AM
I’ve arrived at Pauley Pavilion for No. 8 UCLA gymnastics ome opener against Illinois.

I’ll have updates and an article to come for @latimes.com. Meet to start in 50 minutes.
