Rio's got nowt on Buxton! That's right, it was the world famous Buxton Carnival at the weekend and the weather just happened to be disgustingly good throughout.

The secret of Holcombe Moor military grounds? Why it's only the location of the obstacle course from beloved British TV show, The Krypton Factor (1977-1995).

Ramsbottom, a much nicer place than the name suggests, has a variety of interesting sights and scenery, not least the military firing range that hides a nostalgic secret...

Enjoy a free slice of serenity from the top of Catstye Cam, looking out over Red Tarn to Striding Edge.

The hike up Berkhouse Moor from Glenridding towards Helvellyn is strenuous but well worth it for the views over Ulswater and Red Tarn.

Thor's Cave in the Peak District, UK.

Helvellyn via Striding Edge yesterday. As someone not accustomed to elevated exposure, this was a new challenge for me. A cool-off in the stream afterwards was well needed!

The perfect Saturday... a fabulous group hike in great weather, drinks and dinner at a fantastic pub, and an open-air concert at the gorgeous Gawsworth Hall.

A wholesome volunteering day at Chester Zoo, preparing winter feed for the giraffes and okapi.

The jewel in the New Mills crown: the Millennium Walkway, which curves around the cliff over the Goyt River opposite Tor Vale Mill.
June 17, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Saturday's hike was more of a pub crawl (pub hike?), starting at the lovely New Mills Heritage Centre, stopping at a number of the wonderful watering holes along the way.

Viaducts on viaducts, ruined mills, cliffs and weirs; all hidden in the heart of the small northern town called New Mills.

More Derbyshire delights from Sunday's hike. The resplendent Lathkill Dale and nearby Coal Pit bridge. Perfect packed lunch spot.

A lavish dollop of green in Great Shacklow Wood, plus a glimpse of Ashford Bobbin Mill by the River Wye.
June 10, 2025 at 3:52 PM
Yesterday's trek took us from the picturesque village of Ashford-in-the-Water out past the old Magpie lead mine. A perfect spot for a brew and a slice of history.

Maybe frowned upon for a seasoned hiker, but the tram up from Llandudno is a lovely way to take in the panoramic views from the Great Orme.
June 7, 2025 at 12:51 PM
Also stumbled upon this truly elephantine fungus nearby!

Elephant's Cave. Tucked away as you ascend the Great Orme from Llandudno. Carved out by miners, now frequented by climbers and the homeless. A cool find if you know where to look.

Chalets, ski slopes. Who needs the Alps when you have Llandudno? Plus the toboggan run is a lot of fun for kids big and small!
June 4, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Llandudno today, and among its many attractions, the Happy Valley Botanical Gardens are near the top of my list for a recommended visit.

Continuing the Clapham posts; the path down from Ingleborough boasts some rather unique terrain, including the Norber Erratics, looming over the glacier-fed boulder field, and the expansive limestone pavement stretching out towards Pen-y-ghent.

T'was a terrific tunnel.

Some grand old greenery around Clapham (no, not that Clapham, the other one).
May 27, 2025 at 7:58 PM
Trow Gill Gorge. A short walk up from the lovely, one-pub village of Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales.

The interesting terrain is believed to be the result of a collapse in the Ingleborough cave system below.
