We made bad decisions and are now heading for dystopia. Which dystopia you think it will be? Which do you hope for in a 'this is the least shit' sort of way?

Gilead (The Handmaid's Tale)
OmniCity (RoboCop)
Neo-Toyko (Akira)
The Wasteland (Fallout/Mad Max)
Mega-City One (Dredd)

Or any I missed.

M$FT doesn't need you to shill for them. The're a trillion dollar company. If you like win11, that's great. Don't shit on a free software ecosystem that you fail to understand.

First Impressions of the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller (2.4ghz & BT): I don't like it. The back paddles and extra shoulders do not read as their own buttons and can't be mapped in steam. Big downgrade, 8BitDo. I expected better.

If you are still on win 10... congrats, moron. You are contributing to one of the largest botnets in history because you are too stuck up to try a free OS that does everything you need it to and more.

While I got a Elite 2 controller working in linux, I don't recommend it. No issues connecting it or using it under linux; The controller is just shit for the price. Look at 8bitDo controllers instead. I might start reviewing controllers. I got a large enough collection going...

I have seen seen some very stupid posts on here about how your win 10 pc "won't stop working" after EoL and you can keep using it. DO NOT DO THIS. Just becuase you can doesn't mean it isn't incredibly dangerous.

I feel terrible for all those that took the terrible advice to use a 'beginners' distro as their first step into linux gaming.

Now onto some configs of fun things win10 CAN'T do. I think I want to figure out sending sound from my gaming rig to my main system via the network. Difficulty: Pipewire. I did this before with pulseaudio but pipewire seems to be much more complicated. Will have to do some research.

Got a pleasant surprise today. My Xbox Elite 2 Controller and Dongle just worked - no config nonsense. Had to install xone from AUR but that was basically a one-click-install sort of thing. I was not expecting this to work.

Three yays for yay.

Satisfactory "Playtest"

Satisfactory is on the list only to test modding and configuration. Works. Though at first it looked like ass - just like Witcher 3. I think the issue is AA. After messing around with the settings it looked much better. Might go back to Witcher and see if that was the issue.

Witcher 3 "Benchmark"

W3 Does not have a benchmark - I just played a new game with RT Ultra settings while the steam performance overlay was on. Averaged around 113 - much lower than win10 and it looked like ass. I might have to play around with the settings on this one. Calling it a loss for now.

Cyberpunk2077 Benchmark:

(Ray Tracing Medium - No DLSS/Frame Gen)

Min: 100
Max: 154
Avg: 122

Higher min than win10, but lower max. I will still take that as a success.
September 19, 2025 at 6:41 AM
RDRII Benchmark:

Min: 71
Max: 201
Avg: 124

Under win10 it barely got above 90 so calling this a success

So far, going well.

✅ Monitor Config (had issues in Win10)
✅ OBS / Capture Card
✅ OpenRGB - All Devices Working
✅ Sunshine / Moonlight
❔ Games still installing. Will test later tonight
September 19, 2025 at 3:39 AM
I will be testing this setup with the following games:
CyberPunk 2077
Witcher 3
Red Dead Redemption 2
Satisfactory

This spread is not just to test performance but helper apps as well (such as the new Nexus App and the Satisfactory Mod App).

I got a pleasant surprise when I started up OpenRGB this time - everything worked. RAM, GPU, Razer Controller. Everything but the mobo (Signal could fix that in Win10) so marking that a W in the Linux column. Not a huge fan of RGB, but cool blues and purples are better than unicorn vomit.

It should not be this hard to add drives to Steam in Linux. Drives are formatted Ext4, mounted correctly with a healthy chmod user/group and permissions that allow everyone to read/write/execute. Steam should be able to see these.

First time to linux? Do not think dual booting will give you the best of both worlds. Get a separate system. Something cheep from a secondhand market. Old dell omniplex and hp business solution systems can be bought up for a steal and make a good test bed. Or, get yourself a RaspPi or equivalent.
September 18, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Everyone's use case is different. For some of you one 1 or 2tb is plenty. For my needs, that is just not enough. So the final drive config for my system will look something like this:
M.2 500gb - Linux Root/Home
M.2 2tb - Game Library 1
2x 1tb SSDs RAID 0 - Game Library 2
4tb HDD - Cold Storage
September 18, 2025 at 9:50 PM
Before I continue - Dual Booting a gaming rig is a bad idea especially if you use Steam. This is personal experience talking. You can't share game libraries between the two which means you need double the drive space. Can that be done? Sure. Is it practical? Absolutely not.

To start this journey, I will be using @endeavouros.com.web.brid.gy, an Arch-based system. I use EndeavourOS on all my rigs and find it to be a pleasant experience. There are gaming specific distros out there, but I think I prefer something more broad in scope for this project
September 18, 2025 at 7:26 PM
I have been using linux since the days of 28.8k modems and CRT screens. Every system in my home from my daily-driver laptop to my dev/writing system runs some version of Arch. Five systems in all. But there is one that is still got Microsoft's claws in it: My gaming rig. It's time to change that.
September 18, 2025 at 7:07 PM
Done with politics for a while. The right is too stupid to reason with and the left has no backbone. Gonna just work on my rigs wait for it all to implode
