When Trump imposes tariffs on Colombian coffee, Colombian flowers, Colombian bananas and pineapples and avocados, on Colombian oil, it's us Americans who will pay those added costs. We're not even a week into Trump's term and he's already imposed a brand new tax on all of us.

I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

Trump's punitive tariffs and visa restrictions on Colombia in response to their rejection of deportation flights show the growing tension and challenges in addressing immigration policies. These measures could have significant repercussions for both countries.

Rubio's pause of PEPFAR funding is a serious blow to global health efforts. PEPFAR has been a lifeline for millions, providing essential HIV/AIDS medications and support. This pause jeopardizes the lives of those who rely on this program and undermines years of progress in the HIV/AIDS.

Less than a week into this administration and his already breaking laws.
LATE NIGHT PURGE

Trump just fired the Inspectors General of 12 federal agencies, clearing the way for him to appoint cronies who will turn a blind eye to waste, fraud and abuse.

Trump fires at least 12 independent inspectors general in late-night purge
The dismissals could clear the way for the president to install loyalists in the crucial role of identifying fraud, waste and abuse in the government.

Pete Hegseth's confirmation as Secretary of Defense is a blatant example of cronyism. His lack of qualifications and experience is overshadowed by Trump's preference for his TV persona. This decision is a disservice to our nation's security and leadership. #NotMyDefenseSecretary
The same people having a temper tantrum over DEI just confirmed the least qualified Secretary of Defense in US history because Trump liked him on TV.

More from inside NIH:

Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday.

That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

Troubling possibilities: imagine if these raids begin targeting children as a way to bait their parents. This scenario would echo some of the darker tactics of history, drawing unsettling parallels to practices used by authoritarian regimes. #NoSanctuary #ProtectImmigrants

Elon Musk's recent gesture at the inauguration event was deeply troubling. It bore an unsettling resemblance to a Nazi salute, and I believe it was intentional. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and highlights the need for accountability among our public figures. #ElonMusk #Inauguration2025

Disappointed to see Pete Hegseth confirmed as Secretary of Defense. Concerns about his past and qualifications were not adequately addressed. This decision does not inspire confidence in our leadership. #NotMyDefenseSecretary
