Modernist. Internationalist. Antiracist. #MDANT. In my head, I’m a writer; in reality, I assess your vital signs. Mostly music-based words occasionally cobbled together at: http://www.theacousticeggbox.com
Fabulous LP & Rutherford’s cheeky knife aside, we had a Russian made Rigonda Bolshoi beast of a radiogram. The monolithic speakers, like yours, were also surprisingly great. I used to sit in between them listening to the crazy stereo sounds of Jean Michel Jarre’s electronic masterpiece, Equinoxe

Daoud’s “ok” is hands down my jazz LP of the year. Ive posted his music before & hardly any1 noticed. He is EXCEPTIONAL guys! If Chet Baker recorded Rise era Herb Alpert circa with bits of David Axelrod thrown in for good measure…
Here’s a stunning live version of Dijon 😍 youtu.be/5AEU_ZdQGEY?...

How to describe Devotion & The Black Divine - the fabulous new LP from anaiis. How about lo-fi mystical soul? There are some stoned Massive Attack + chilled SAULT style vibes too. Have a listen to Deus Deus then pull up a reefer & sink into the rest of the album. 😍🕶️ youtu.be/ZCPLV15tKlI?...

35 years after I last watched them, Martin Stephenson & The Daintees at Bristol Thekla on Sunday night were just as wonderful as ever. MS is the very definition of the epithet “undervalued songwriting genius”. Not only that, he’s a warm, gifted & hilarious raconteur. A beautiful evening all round ❤️

D’Angelo, 1 of the pioneers of the 90s neo soul movement, dead at 51 from pancreatic cancer

A hugely influential talent who sat on a lofty intersection where Marvin meets Prince

For me Brown Sugar is 1 of the great soul LPs of the last 40yrs. A groundbreaking record made by a true maverick.

RIP

Richard Hawley and his amazing band performing Coles Corner on Weston Super Mare’s Grand Pier last night.

From the opening note of the string section on the album’s title track, I may have had some grit in my eyes.

Music that could move mountains.

Exquisite ❤️

The more I play this LP the better it sounds. It’s a real contender for my album of the year. Seeing them live recently has only enhanced my feelings about it, as having met them I can confirm they are a genuinely lovely bunch of gents. Borderlands by #TheMilk - British soul at its very best ❤️

Cheers lovely man!

Of all the places, Stroud in Gloucestershire has been the place to be tonight for a UK soul extravaganza.
The Milk and New Street Adventure take a bow. 2 great new albums this year and 2 acts that need way more love. Get on their good feet geezers ❤️

Whilst in Croatia, I discovered that the “Cats of Dubrovnik” is an actual thing. They are “community” cats, and roam around being looked after and fed by the residents. All looking healthy, hearty and no doubt very wise. Here are 3 of the little beauties

Even when the storm clouds rolled in last Wednesday, Croatia’s Dalmatian coastline still looked incredible. It really is a beautiful country

This is one of the most uplifting memoirs i think I’ve ever read. It also helps give Kevin Rowland’s recent book added context @oharaviolin.bsky.social you are an inspiration - kind, caring, modest & supremely talented. And to top it all, a Bristol girl too!
Thank you for the music ❤️

Part memoirs, part confessional, part 50 Shades Of Grey. Kevin Rowland’s warts & all autobiography is a psychological sex drugs & rock n roll thriller. His life is, literally, a white knuckle ride; the embodiment of Sturm & Drang! Not always easy to love him, but always easy to admire him. A one off

Love him!
This is the final selection from Mr Burnham 1982 contest.
Many hearts were broken by this beautiful bunch of men 😂

So many female artists are releasing great music this year. Heres another of my favourites - The Long Way Round (on Blue Note if you will which is the debut from young Londoner, Maya Delilah.
Heres a brilliant live version of the funky as hell, Squeeze.
😍

Just finished this fantastic book about Tom Hibbert - one of the most entertaining and idiosyncratic music journalists ever. A one off for sure but his talents were lost to the world way too early.
Who The Hell …? was worth the price of Q magazine alone.
A highly recommended read

47yrs ago today, my dad died. He was just 37. This is the earliest photo I have of us together from my christening some time in late ‘63. It appears we were quite the hirsute couple!

He adored Cass Elliot so here’s his favourite song of hers: Sing Your Own Kind Of Music

My discovery of the month is the fine eponymous 2nd LP from Freedom Affair. The 3 ladies fronting the band Paula, Seyko & Shon all have goosebump inducing voices. It’s Muscle Shoals style Southern Soul at its very best. Heres a superb live version of Dont You Wanna Love Me 😍
