The hippogriff was a massive headache to render. To the point that I think Framestore made a loss (I could be mistaken on that)
Now it’s much more simple, and probably be done for tv with much less time and budget.

First one is the 2008 other BBC version.
The bbc version has much better VFX than the golden compass even with a smaller budget and 5x the amount of footage.

I used to work in a lab that did 3D reconstruction. One intern specialised in “zero shot” recons. Scholl or some other company sponsored them to make feet models.
We did debate the potential for on demand 3D printing of celebrity feet. However despite the money we decided it wasn’t moral.

I suspect it might be because running the projectors at decent brightness, plus having staff who can clean/fit lenses costs cash.
But you can get LASERS now, I’m not sure how that affects quality though. I assume they are less explody than the normal lamps.
