The more I think on the new farm tax, the more I'm thinking it's been misjudged.
It comes down to where we draw the line on "small" farms, & currently £1m is probably not it.
I'd be happy to see the policy tweaked but NOT before a discussion on the paradox of high land values & low farm incomes.

Question for the void:
If a farmer gifts his farm (the business assets, not a house) to his child at least 7 years before they die, would the child have to pay capital gains tax and how would this be calculated?

Too much emphasis is on net-zero 'how' & too little on the 'why'.

I'm going to throw in my 2 cents on the whole "food security" debate.
In Somerset I'd say 70% of agricultural land is either beef pasture or for growing winter cattle feed.
Are we really saying that beef is essential produce? It's one of the most luxurious & inefficient food sources you can get!
