Former🍎, always🍊

I’m figuring it out.
I have completely culled my feed of AR/VR shill content. Feels like a break up and I’m clearing out AR/VR’s stuff.

@hankgreen.bsky.social you mentioned on dear Hank & John that you get sucked into the apps when checking DMs. I highly recommend using beeper to avoid this. It aggregates your DMs from X, IG, and others into a single feedless app. It’s worked great for me.

‎Beeper: All Chats, One App
‎Beeper is a universal chat app. Now you can send and receive messages on 9 different chat networks, all from one app. Supports WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Signal, Telegram, Twitter (X), LinkedIn...

I recently switched from chatGPT to Claude. I did this for a couple reasons:

1. GPT 5 tries too hard to be relatable.
2. Anthropic is focused on its core experience rather than churning out a handful of bad products like AI brain-rot TikTok.
3. OpenAI subpoenaed the funeral of a dead teenager.

Now feels like an awful time to be in tech if you have absolutely no interest in working on an AI product.

@caseynewton.bsky.social @kevinroose.com literally every Waymo in SF is stuck on 14th st right now

@davidimel.com do we know whether or not Perplexity’s Comet is a Halt & Catch Fire reference?

Y’all have mentioned it on the podcast a few times but no one has pointed this out.

@caseynewton.bsky.social I’m 98% certain I saw you grabbing dinner near Mission-Dolores yesterday evening.

I resisted the temptation to fan girl and interrupt your meal, so I’m doing it now. Big fan of the show and your work in general!

@hankgreen.bsky.social @dearhankandjohn.bsky.social why are rare earth magnets so reasonably priced?

Using an iPad as a computer feels like staying in a house with no bathroom.

@quiche.industries hey! Does quiche have a universal link like other iOS apps (chrome:// or pebble://)?

I’m trying to configure it with the app list widget.

I am once again begging for a version of YouTube and IG without short form video.

@hankgreen.bsky.social have you considered writing a book on running a business?

I’m a startup founder and I’m not very good at it, but I’d like to get better! My problem is it’s hard to cut through the noise of “advice” from people who are clearly full of shit.

It’d be cool to see a “local” filter for app stores. I’d be more likely to use an app if I knew I could walk 3 blocks to file a bug report.

@reckless.bsky.social why isn’t @theverge.com a PWA? With a single file and an icon, I can have it on my Home Screen and unobstructed by the browser bar.

Why isn’t every blog a PWA?

Maybe we weren’t supposed to live in a society

I’m sure it violates all kinds of design rules, but I’m really digging our app icon.

Also shout out to PWAs! Easy to setup and no App Store process

Continuing my pebble appreciation. 10 years later and it still has all the features I need. Time, notifications, health, and calendar, all out of the box.

I’m unironically for California secession at this point. We pay for everything yet our votes are worth less than someone in a less populated state.

It’s like someone spat in our food and still expects us to pay for theirs. But every meal.

“we were a niche credit card company targeting an under served market, but they kept defaulting on payments so we pivoted to AI powered debt collections.” - a founder with absolutely zero self awareness.

If my startup fails because I didn’t make enough cringy posts on LinkedIn, I’m ok with it.

What’s your over and under on outages brought on by vibed code? I’m thinking we have 3-6 months before prod starts going down for a bunch of small to midsized companies.

The death of Twitter and the fragmentation of social has left a lot of niche communities with no place to go. Threads is awful, Mastodon is for your socialist sysadmin, and Bluesky is the boring progressive response to X.

Reddit & mastodon fill the void a bit, but they’re not quite the same.

8 years later and the pebble timeline is still the only calendar view that doesn’t stress me out.
