I can think of a few things more terrifying than a person indistinguishable from anyone else. who nonetheless needs to imagine an omniscient all powerful Judge and Punisher to stop them from Murdering people.

To me A person like that is stretching the bounds of what it means to be human 💀

Some of 'them' are not like 'us'

By that I mean. There are people who are clearly held within the bounds of basic morality by *literal magical thinking*

People if not for their beliefs would be monsters.

The whole book is an open exploration of how things fall apart. What endings are. What 'revelation' really means.
And what we do in the face of the unknowable. Both real and imagined.

a society where "bad immigrants" are demonised is a society where no immigrant can truly feel welcome, because aren't we all just one wrong turn or accident away from being unemployed? on disability benefits? unable to care for our children without state help? just no such thing as a safe immigrant
