Context: in the early 1990s most of the computers at the observatory had Trek names. The main servers were of course kirk.harvard.edu and spock.harvard.edu and the network name label was 'federation'.

This is a software program called SAOImage DS9, first released 1998. The DS9 doesn't stand for anything. The fact that it is third in a series of image display packages where the previous two were called SAOImage (1990) and SAOImage TNG (mid 1990s) is purely coincidental please don't tell Paramount
