Gartsherrie was one of the biggest ironworks in the world with 16 blast furnaces. Within a decade Scotland went from net importer to net exporter of pig iron.

#OTD in 1796 ironmaster William Baird was born at Woodhead Farm, Old Monkland.

With his brothers William established the Gartsherrie Iron Works in Coatbridge in 1830, the 1st pig iron works purpose built to use James Beaumont Neilson's recently patented Hot Blast Process 1/2
