And the trend continues, with this happening directly outside my classroom today. We gave up on class and whale watched for 30 min. 🐋

Just a stunning day of teaching my class on the CA coast today. In one field trip day we saw a great horned owl, a river otter, a dozen shorebird species and a whale (still identifying). There are so many places and things worth fighting for in this planet.

Meghan and colleagues gathered oceanographic data and looked at vulnerability of 6 commercially harvested species to changing conditions. Meghan was able to use measured ocean data to link up with specific life stages/habitats to understand vulnerability to acidification and hypoxia. (2/n)

One of my absolute favorite things is: Great Horned Owls 🦉 In the evenings I walk my dogs, and their hoot hoot hooots just … calm me.
Today one swooped in front of my car, landed on a branch, and looked straight at me.
As Rebecca Solnit says: “Everything we can save is worth saving”

Just a reminder that it’s ok to be offline in the coming days to preserve your own mental health. For my part, I’ll be donating to community orgs and spending some time in nature. The fight ahead is long and we are going to need some resilience.

Happy new year. Trying to ease myself into 2025 via rest, reflection, and a deep appreciation of snow. We have so much work to do together this year. 💪

The Laguna de Santa Rosa is full, beautiful, and peaceful after a 3 day period where we got >12 inches of rain. Calm after the storms appreciated.

Enjoyed the discussion by @amywestervelt.bsky.social @geoffreysupran.bsky.social and Streven Donziger last night! Especially appreciated the speakers highlighting how important it is for scientists to speak up about their work and ethically engage with communities.

Just spent 2 days at Oregon State University w/ meetings, meals, & multiple discussions/events on @ateverydepth.bsky.social
All of those discussions involved acknowledging the progress we are making on ocean/climate issues & also the losses we collectively feel on this rapidly changing planet.

Just a stunning few days in Seattle. Haven’t lived in the PNW for about 30 years and parts of it still feel like “home”. 🏔️

My feet are on the shores of Lake Tahoe today! Striving for a book tour with a low(er) carbon footprint, so I’m saying “yes” to events that I can drive to, zoom into, or combine multiple events in one trip. Reach out if you have an event idea for @ateverydepth.bsky.social! 📚 🌊
