the characters had almost zero agency or motivations because things were just happening TO them; they could only react rather than act

the book I just read didn't appear to think that the situation of someone showing up at the room of two mcs to tell them that something dramatic just happened elsewhere like FIVE TIMES, the exact same scene and structure, should maybe have been mixed around a little
