I was #1 on a fourth job, and even though it was less prestigious, I took it because I did not trust any of those schools to not just close their searches, particularly after they had spent months desperately wanting Mr. Wonderful.

I lost three jobs in one season to the *same* white man, and all three search committees told me all I had to do is wait until July when they had finished giving him early tenure because he could only take one of them. This was in 1990 tho, before white men became permanently oppressed.

I think they are often exhausted and depleted, and that these programs give them respite: 30 days of knowing your child isn’t dead or on the street, 30 days when you can sleep at night.

I don’t blame parents for being desperate, and having an addicted kid is scary. On the other hand, the information about these programs and the harm they do is readily available.

Nick’s experience of progressing to heroin as a consequence of rehab is exactly what happened to our young person.
